Daytona Bike Week

by Alain W. Bélisle

So a few days, 17 in fact after having accepted this difficult mission, I hit the road headed into the sun 2 300 km and 28 hours of burning asphalt ! Sometimes I was transformed into a Sunday afternoon Pavarotti and yes, no one is perfect, I confess I like opera ! Maybe a little more appropriately, sometimes I was Willie Nelson singing “On the road again” in an attempt to stay awake as the miles separating me from my sunny goal accumulated. How many times did I wish the signs showing me the distance were in kilometres; they are so much shorter ! But it turns out that pleasure has to be paid for. By accepting this difficult job my task was to give you, those unlucky enough to have never been, the desire to participate and for those who have lived the experience, the need to return. Okay, I grant you, it’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it !

Finally ! After endless hours of riding, I saw my first palm tree. Wow ! A had finally arrived. All along the way I saw that I wasn’t the only one who had answered the call. Just like pilgrims answering a divine calling, hordes of pick-ups, many of them dragging black and orange trailers some of which were very impressive, shared the road to the Promised Land. And for good reason; more than 500,000 people gathered for this mega party, making this event second in the ranks of biker rallies, right after Sturgis in far off South Dakota.
